Manuela Limas

Born in Penina, Manuela Limas helped, since she was a child, her grandmother to step on the esparto water, without knowing what it was for. Marriage and the move to the Sarnadas introduced her to the trade. After years away, she returned with the Casa do Esparto project.

Born in Penina, a few kilometers from Sarnadas, Manuela Limas helped, since she was a child, her grandmother to step on the esparto, without knowing what it was for.

When she got married, she moved to Sarnadas and got to know the fate of the pieces — from nets and ropes to rugs and donkey heads. She worked with artisans from neighboring villages, producing pieces with the material delivered to D. Aldegundes, later selling the finished product.

After years away, she returned with the Casa do Esparto project, creating today her own pieces. It values the transmission of knowledge to the younger ones and the interaction with colleagues and visitors, so that this art is not lost.
