To celebrate the 5th anniversary of Cristina magazine, Loulé Criativo invited stylist Filipe Carriço to coordinate a unique photo session. Inspired by the Algarve’s dryland orchard, the production came to life among almond trees in bloom, where soft and floral looks announce the trends of the new season. In a tribute to the region’s roots, Filipe Carriço involved local artisans in the creation of pieces that combine tradition and modernity, bringing the authenticity of the Algarve to the fashion universe.

We are growing! It is with this message that the Loulé Design Lab announces the new phase of applications for residents and incubated in this creation, research and experimentation laboratory of Loulé Criativo, a project of the Municipality of Loulé.

On Tuesday, January 22nd, CEARTE held the seminar “Paths of Innovation in Handicrafts”, integrated in the Loulé Design Lab cycle of conversations, in partnership with the Municipality of Loulé.

Designer Outlet Algarve hosts, until the end of February, an exhibition of crafts and culture that aims to highlight the creativity and products of local designers and artists. Decorative objects, furniture, accessories and jewelry, as well as restored antique objects will be exhibited in 11 windows of the space.

Several conferences and workshops open to the community and pop-up stores have made known the work carried out by the approximately 20 designers incubated at the Loulé Design Lab (…)

On March 7th, the municipal executive of Loulé received the visit of the South African ambassador to Portugal, Mmamokwena Gaoretelelwe, who thus had the opportunity to discover some points of the municipality of Loulé, as well as economic and environmental initiatives existing in this territory.

The rehabilitation work of the emblematic Gama Lobo Palace, known by most Loulé residents as the “Palace of the Spaniards” was inaugurated last Saturday. An intervention that constitutes “a remarkable work from the point of view of architecture, respect for pre-existences but also with the incorporation of new materials and new elements”, as highlighted by the Deputy Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, present at the inaugural ceremony.

HAT THE Loulé Design Lab is housed in the beautifully restored Palácio Gama Lobo speaks of the essence of this unique project, which has been created to actively support ideas and projects in the areas of design applied to local culture.

How much weight does a contract mesh hold? How are the slats of childhood memories intertwined? Is it possible to blow plastic as if it were glass? And keep the metallic rhythm of the boilermakers making themselves sound through the streets of Loulé? The Loulé Criativo project wants to preserve ancestral techniques to adapt them to today’s needs, in a development strategy for the interior of the Algarve that aims to create jobs, combat the seasonality of tourism and adapt to a sustainable cycle.

After having introduced several environmental measures over the last few editions, at the MED Festival, in 2023, the Municipality of Loulé wants to reinforce this vision with a Sustainability Plan that, among other actions, integrates an ecological footprint measurement system to measure the impact of the event on the environment. The garbage, by the hand and art of a group of designers, was transformed into objects of fashion and practical use. From bags for planters to outdoor kitchens for children, including games for the elderly, waste has become joy. The advertising banner that announced Áurea’s concert two years ago has been converted into a “chic” bag that will go on the arm of women gardeners in Vilamoura. A team of nine designers, in partnership with Inframoura, converted garbage into art and gave new life to obsolete objects. During the summer months, more than 50 tons of monos were collected in the largest tourist resort in the Algarve – sofas, refrigerators, televisions, wooden pallets, furniture and various trinkets.

The Municipality of Loulé was awarded the SDGlocal Award in the “Municipal Practices” category for the sustainable development goals, through the “Loulé Design Lab” project.

Designer Sílvia Rodrigues, businesswoman from Loulé and founder of the Sigues brand, is the first Portuguese to be present at an edition of the Salão Internacional de la Moda Flamenca (SIMOF) which, this year, takes place from 7 to 10 February, in Seville (Spain)

The conditions are created for traditional arts to regain relevance in the economy. But it is crucial that practices and products evolve and update themselves to be prepared for the demands of the market and new paradigms.

As we walk through the narrow alleys of Loulé, in the old cluster of Arab houses, behind the Market, itself Mudéjar-inspired, we find, scattered around, small shops that serve as workshops, where Loulé’s artisans develop their artifacts, in the typical way of the region.

Recovering artisanal traditions from a region or locality, reinvigorating its colors, its ways of making and using it, is already an extraordinary feat. But making people’s lives socially and economically sustainable is an even greater feat.
