“Nativity scenes in Palma”, made by Sónia Mendez, an artisan member of Casa da Empreita, will be on display at Palácio Gama Lobo, in Loulé, until January 6th.
In this solo exhibition, Sónia Mendez presents handmade nativity scenes, where each piece translates the ancestral technique of the Algarve enterprise. The palm empreita, traditionally used in utilitarian objects, thus gains a new artistic expression, becoming a symbol of memory, spirituality and contemporary creativity.
Dedicated to the preservation and reinvention of the palm empreita, a technique passed down from generation to generation, this artist «develops pieces that cross utility and art, memory and innovation, keeping alive one of the most emblematic artisanal traditions of the Algarve».
The exhibition can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and on Saturdays, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Closed on Sundays and holidays.
Admission is free.
