Aldegundes Gomes

Born in Sarnadas, Aldegundes Gomes remains active and full of memories, despite its many springs. The esparto grass assumed a role of great importance throughout her life and today she is the most experienced of the artisans of Casa do Esparto.

Born in Sarnadas (parish of Alte, Loulé), Aldegundes Gomes, already over 90 years old, remains active and full of memories.

He learned the craft of esparto in the 60s, reconciling it with domestic life and the management of the family grocery store. He supplied esparto to his customers and received, in return, crafted pieces, helping local families.

Today she is the most experienced of the artisans of Casa do Esparto, installed in the old primary school of Sarnadas, where she shows how the plant, once forgotten, is transformed into utilitarian and decorative pieces.

With energy and humor, he says:

“Sometimes I work with esparto even to take a break from the housework… Thank God, I’m still doing it.”
