Exhibition “Aligned by the Same Wool” – The National Society of Fine Arts

The result of the homonymous artistic residency promoted by Loulé Criativo, a project of the Municipality of Loulé, Aligned by the Same Wool brings together works by Ana Soromenho, Cláudia Moreira, Luísa Leão, Maria Terra, Rita Martins Pereira, Rita Teles Garcia and Susana Mendez. Over several months, the artists followed the complete cycle of the wool of the Churra Algarvia sheep — from shearing to spinning —, transforming an ancestral raw material into a set of works that crosses contemporary creation, heritage and territory.

The exhibition proposes a reflection on the value of traditional knowledge and local resources, having as its starting point the wool of the Churra Algarvia, an indigenous breed from the south of Portugal whose preservation is closely linked to the cultural and environmental identity of the Algarve. Through different artistic languages, the works reveal new possibilities for a material historically associated with rural daily life, affirming it as a matter of experimentation, memory and innovation.

Curated by Vasco Águas, also responsible for the exhibition design, the artistic residency was trained by Paula and Pedro Neves and with the strategic partnership of the Algarchurra Association, bringing together artists, artisans, creators and local producers in a project to enhance tangible and intangible heritage.

The itinerancy of Aligned by the Same Wool reflects the commitment of the Municipality of Loulé to the enhancement of heritage, contemporary creation and endogenous resources, bringing to different audiences a project that establishes bridges between art, design, craftsmanship and territorial identity.
