Collaborative pairs between designers and artisans
The Design Lab challenged the residents of its creative community and the artisans of the Loulé Criativo workshop network to form collaborative pairs, with the aim of developing a new product within the universe of work of each artisan. From here, dialogue was generated, ideas were discussed and creative complicity was built. Following this process of active listening, the designer put his proposals up for discussion, followed by a process of joint development, where flexibility and mutual availability generated surprising results.
The objects now belong to the artisans and will be sold in their usual circuits, and the margins for changes to them have been defined with the designer. This happy meeting of different generations and origins was enriching for everyone. Knowledge is renewed and new possibilities are found for the construction of contemporaneity and the future of traditional arts. This is the action of Loulé Criativo.

The luxury of taking care of your own home, as well as your own soul, encourages the use of natural materials and artisanal techniques that resonate with an inner search for sustainability. The thin palm is highlighted without color, the rectangular is versatile to store, the fabrics are reused and stamped with a stamp inspired by the young artisan. That each piece communicates 54 years of contract plus 30 years of cleaning.

Once upon a time, there were already worn jeans, tired and worn. One day, they found
a few Palmas on the way to an "enterprise", quickly made friends and joined the
same path. Fate willed that some skilled hands would find them together, and quickly transform them into a collection of bags and purses, young and vivacious,
ready for a new life.
Materials: palm, denim and burlap.
"CONTRACTED" TROUSERS
Maria Margarida Cortez Ferreira, artesã empreita.
Jorge dos Santos, artesão empreita
Ana Hermenegildo, Designer Industrial - ESAD.CR Estágio Curricular no Loulé Design Lab
Although under the doubt whether or not the palm could support the weight of a vase, Margarida and Jorge did not hesitate to lay their hands safe and experienced to the challenge. Curious about this project was the fact that the material did not allow itself to be easily molded, on the contrary, it was the palm that led us to the
Final result.
Techniques: baracinha and palm mesh. Materials: palm and red clay
PALM POTS
Inácia Coelho, artesã empreita
Sandra Neto, Arquiteta – FA.ULisboa.
D. Inácia is a master in the technique of passed braids (overlapping and sewn on the edge) and insists on pigmenting the leaves with very particular shades of colour. We came up with the idea of intertwining the braids alternately, discovering another way to form palm surfaces, without the use of sewing, and minimizing time, material and resources. We thus produced a two-colored, continuous and moldable "cloth" that was able to form a bag in its entirety – clearly one of Mrs. Inácia's favorite objects.
Materials: palm trophyrted with pigment.
IGNATIA
Maria Almerinda Miguel, artesã empreita
Paulo Tomé, Artista
The unexpected came up in conversation between the participants of this project. At the whim of time and the wind, childhood and the timeless requirements brought by the heart were discussed. With the purpose of preserving old traditions, what was achieved gave real consistency to what was intended. And from the exchange of free and spontaneous ideas, the shepherd's cape with hood and the notepad suitable for herding were born - he is also, like many, an artist.
Blocks Materials: Wood
reused, vegan leather, paper, iron.
Techniques of the coat: contract of 13 branches, simple and slatted.
THE REMAINING COCA
Maria Duartina Mendes, artesã empreita
João Carrilho, Communication Art & Design, Royal College of Art, London.
In an attempt to rethink the functionality of some of the more traditional pieces in the enterprise, such as the Balsa (a type of bag used by shepherds to take lunch
and personal belongings for the field), we simplify these pieces with the introduction
of geometric shapes and the addition of small details in leather. The result is three objects that we call Boxes and that adapt to modern life in its multifunctionality.
Materials: empreita (palm), upper, leather cord.
BOXES
Alzira Maria Neves, artesã empreita
Pedro Ramalhete, Doutorado em Design – Univ. Aveiro.
In a first phase, and following the guidelines of this challenge, I started by trying to understand D. Alzira's technique,
get to know his pieces and the artifacts he likes to build. The partnership progressed, several ideas emerged, but we opted for the most unusual concept. Thus, from the hands of Dona Alzira, the "eight" was born, a bag that allows us to separate what we carry in the two partitions it contains.
Materials: Contractor and linen fabric (handle).

This pouf was designed with the easiest way to take advantage of the waste resulting from the preparation of palm leaves. It is a versatile object, it can be used together or separately and mimics the shape of the traditional Algarve cataplana.
Techniques: Braided palm empreita, palm baracinha, palm mesh, joinery and resin preservation technique.
KATHAPLANO PUFF
Ludovina Bota, artesã empreita
Sílvia Rodrigues, Designer de Comunicação - UAlg
Inspired by rebellion, youth and irreverence, but also by the rare sensitivity of Anaisa, a beautiful and sweet girl, this artisan developed this line of necklaces, earrings, bracelets, under the watchful and knowledgeable eye of Sílvia Rodrigues.
Materials: palm, metal parts.
ANAISA
Analide Carmo, artesão cobre
Ana Rita Contente, Designer – FA.ULisboa
A copper plate can be transformed into an immensity of containers, to the taste and knowledge of Mr. Analide. As a designer, a design process is all the richer because it forces us to work according to new paradigms (and, without a doubt, this was the case). When the mutual discovery of a personal empathy is added, in fact, the challenge is won.
Material: copper. Technique: beaten plate. Inside the pan, tinned.
DONA TACHA, MISTER MISCHIEVOUS
Jürgen Cramer, artesão cobre
Christopher Whitelaw, Master of Architecture from Columbia University
The spice rack covers the luxury of taking care of your home as well as your own soul, encourages the use of natural materials and artisanal techniques that resonate with an inner search for sustainability. This shelf is an architectural detail for the kitchen in folded copper foil and texture of the craftsman's choice. It is designed to minimize waste, optimize production and choose preferred techniques.
Materials and technique: 0.8mm copper, bent and lightly polished.

The beating of copper, the cutting and the skill of those who handle the art of boilermaking down to the smallest detail. We are transported to the traditional orchards of rainfed trees, almond trees, fig trees, carob trees. From David's skillful hands and inventive spirit came almonds, figs and leaves, which combined design and know-how in earrings, bracelets and necklaces, which give air to the orchards.
NECKLACES AND ORCHARDS
Bernadette Martins, ceramista
Ortiz Manoli, Artista
Here, everything is natural! Through a botanical printing process with clay, the leaves and other natural elements, collected nearby, are forever incorporated into the ceramic pieces. The two artists combined their extensive experience and research in the areas of botanical printing and ceramics. Materials: natural leaves and plants, clay, ceramics.
Technique: preparation of natural adhesive, application of plants, and baking the ceramic pieces again, this time, by steam, wrapped with a cloth.
ORGANIC ALCHEMY
José Machado Pires, ceramista
Razvan Crestin, Escultor - FBAUL
Developed by José Machado Pires, the Algarve Bowls combine traditional and contemporary craftsmanship. Inspired by the Algarve's coastal/inland duality, the Bowls were created from maritime motifs (shells) and alluding to the mountains (cistus flower). This duality also reflects the unique character of each piece and the way they can relate to each other in a single element.
Technique: manufactured through a sculptural modeling process from a mixture of different clays. Finally, they were subjected to a monofiring in an electric oven at 1020 degrees.
