"Climate Tapestries" of Loulé - Temperature

They are the result of an invitation made to all citizens to participate in a project that brings together science and art and, in this way, give shape to the first "climate tapestries" in the municipality of Loulé.

Intersection between art and science

Loulé’s “Climate Tapestries” project – Temperature – materializes the reality of global warming in a very impressive way, calling for reflection and climate action.

Based on the data recorded at the Automatic Meteorological Station (EMA) of Loulé (compiled by IPMA – Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere), 10 tapestries were made in which, with recycled cotton yarn of different colours (to represent different temperature ranges), each thread corresponds to the maximum temperature recorded at the EMA of Loulé on each day, in the last 10 years (2015-2024), from January (bottom) to December (top).

This project was developed in Loulé, on the 28th and 29th of March, with her participation and that of other elements of the community, under the guidance of the artisan and textile artist Susana Mendez, from the idea of the “Tempestry” project (a word that results from the combination of two others: Temperature = Temperature and Tapestry = tapestry), which began in 2017, in the United States of America.
