Nativity scene in Palma

“The Birth” (2019)

The result of a challenge launched by the Municipality of Loulé to Casa da Empreita, the nativity scene “O Nascimento” was created in 2019 and is one of the most significant collective pieces dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the traditional arts of the municipality. Entirely made of white palm and green palm, this nativity scene is a celebration of the Algarve’s artisanal identity and the skills passed down between generations.

Under the guidance of Sónia Mendez, a group of 15 artisans dedicated about 580 hours of work to the creation of more than 255 meters of empreita, mesh and baracinha, integrating practically all the traditional techniques of palm working. The result is a meticulous work, which transforms natural fibers into characters and scenarios that evoke the imagery of Christmas through the delicacy of manual art.

More than a decorative object, this nativity scene is a symbol of the vitality of Loulé’s arts and crafts, highlighting the fundamental role of the artisanal community in the conservation of the region’s intangible heritage.
