Design Lab Creative Community

The Design Lab Creative Community is made up of a new generation of local creators, from different fields and backgrounds, who bring new approaches to local culture and traditions, territorial thinking and development, available resources, and the impact of human action on the environment and the quality of life of the population.

Projects in Incubation

The Design Lab welcomes a diverse group of creators in incubation at Palácio Gama Lobo, providing a conducive environment for the development of ideas and businesses. In this space, designers and makers dedicate themselves to experimentation and prototyping, respond to challenges, share knowledge among peers and the community, and present, promote, and market their work. In an inspiring and collaborative environment, ideas take on new forms, multiply, and innovation thrives.

Descartes Series
Wesley Sacardi
Wesley Sacardi, born in August 1981, is a lifelong learner, passionate about creativity and knowledge sharing. In 2016 he left the Media to create pieces in solid wood, inspired by architecture, Nordic design and wabi-sabi. In 2021 it launched the "Descartes Beyond the Raw Material Series", exploring the reuse of local or recovered wood in ecodesign, uniting artisanal techniques and free forms that preserve the identity of the material and seek balance and harmony.

Lost & found
Kasia Bragiel
Kasia Bragiel, a Polish-born graphic and product designer, trained between her homeland and Milan. She lives and works in Ericeira, valuing craftsmanship, intuition, and simplicity. Her project, Lost & Found, explores the use of local clay and traditional techniques in dialogue with innovation and improvisation. It focuses on a sustainable, creative, and conscious practice, fostering a deep connection with the land, available materials, and manual processes.

Sandra Nascimento
Sandra is a photographer and creative director, with a focus on cyanotype, uniting art, aesthetics and experimentation. She integrates artistic direction and styling to create striking images, combining artisanal techniques and natural materials in a multidisciplinary approach. The Deep Blue project explores cyanotype in dialogue with areas such as recycled paper, plant fibers, natural pigments and ceramics. At the Design Lab, Sandra intends to deepen this research, collaborate and expand the training aspect of her work.

Circular Weaving
Teresa Samissone
Teresa Samissone, fashion designer and costume designer, is the founder of the Portuguese brand Samissone, which combines exclusivity, tradition and innovation. Inspired by her Mozambican roots, she creates unique tailor-made pieces, using high-quality African fabrics that rescue cultural heritage. The Circular Weaving project proposes a sustainable and affordable solution, which reinvents textile traditions to promote responsible practices and positive environmental impact.

Tiago Caldeira
Tiago Caldeira, founder of Oficina33, graduated from the Ricardo do Espírito Santo e Silva Foundation in Lisbon, specializing in built-in joinery. After internships in various workshops, he settled in Loulé. At the Design Lab, he intends to develop the technique of wooden inlays, creating pieces of furniture with minimalist lines that combine tradition and innovation. It values collaboration with artisans and designers to highlight the beauty and versatility of wood.

Margot Ambrosio
Margot Ambrosio, French-Italian with Portuguese roots, has been a designer and couture seamstress for over 10 years. Founder of AVÓ Paris, she aims to unite traditional craftsmanship, such as palm weaving, with contemporary design based on sustainable principles. In his project, he intends to create unique bags, clothes and accessories, valuing ancestral techniques and natural materials. In this residency, she seeks to develop a capsule collection that celebrates memory, art and ecological fashion, collaborating with local artisans.

Marion Gouges
Marion Gouges, an architect by training, is currently dedicated to documentary portrait photography. Established in the Algarve and integrated in the Loulé Design Lab, it focuses on capturing the essence of artisans and creators. The Photographic Portraits – Creators of the Sotavento project aims to promote, through image, small businesses and local knowledge, reinforcing the identity of creative and sustainable entrepreneurship in the region, with special attention to light, space and authenticity.

Faces and Stories of Fishing – Lives by the Sea
Isabel Lourenço
Isabel Lourenço, born in 1987, lives in Loulé. She started in photography at a young age and graduated from ETIC in 2011, after a degree in Tourism. Her work focuses on valuing local culture through image. In the project Faces and Stories of Fishing – Lives by the Sea, she portrays the fishing community exploring identities, practices and transformations of fishing, with the aim of preserving and sharing stories, knowledge and utensils through documentary photography.

Inês São Pedro
Inês São Pedro has a degree in Product Design – ceramics and glass – from ESAD. CR (2013), with complementary training in Fashion and Light Design. Her project explores the technique of ceramic contracting, creating utilitarian and decorative pieces such as salad bowls and lamps, in conjunction with the SAN PI collections. It values the use of Portuguese raw materials, of local origin, and artisanal know-how, expanding the expressive potential of palm and opening new possibilities for the application of this technique.

Carla Martins and Gustavo Arguello
Gustavo Arguello, a product designer and architecture student, and Carla Martins, an industrial designer specializing in graphic design and eco-design, lead Martins Arguello Design Studio. They develop solutions focused on the circular economy. The Re-feito project proposes the redesign of discarded objects, transforming waste into contemporary, personalized decorative pieces loaded with history, promoting the creative reuse of materials.

Bernardo Gomes
Bernardo Gomes graduated in Equipment Design in 2019 from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon and completed his master's degree in Product Design at ESAD Matosinhos in 2022. He was runner-up in the Guilherme Awards in 2019. In 2025, he began incubation at the Design Lab with the OLGA project, a course that fuses traditional knowledge and contemporary design, valuing the identity and artisanal culture of the Algarve.

Ana Silva
Ana Silva, Brazilian, lives in Lagos, Portugal, where she dedicated herself to ceramics after a career in law. She trained at AR.CO and Loulé Criativo, and founded the atelier itsana – handmade ceramics. Her Interactive Tiles project proposes modular, dynamic and customizable ceramic compositions, which reinvent the tradition of Portuguese tiles. It invites experimentation and reinforces the connection between art, identity and territory.

Gonçalo Gama
Gonçalo Gama, Master in Product Design and Degree in Industrial Design from ESAD. CR, works as a designer/craftsman, focused on innovation through design and manufacturing. It investigates the use of palm and local plant fibers in dialogue with ceramics, exploring ancestral techniques in the creation of utilitarian objects. Her work crosses form, function and sustainability, with pieces with organic, curved or uncertain contours, which reveal a strong environmental and social dimension.

Re-feito was born from the need to redirect discarded raw materials for recycling, following the circular economy perspective, through a contemporary restyling of decorative objects, personalized and with a lot of history to tell.

Cláudia Moreira
Cláudia Moreira is an architect graduated from the Technical University of Lisbon and has a master's degree in Urban Culture from UPC/CCCB. She has collaborated in offices in Portugal, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, participated in international competitions and exhibitions. She founded the MOTE Design Studio and has a background in felting, millinery and weaving. The Tanta.Design project involves design and production of yarns and textile objects, using manual dyeing and art yarn spinning, valuing the wool of the Churra Algarvia sheep.

Dobra seeks to bring out the potential of palm frond weaving in its widest context, to bring innovation to the craft via extensive research and experimentation. From the environmental and social dimensions, to the evolution of its manufacture, resulting in functional items for everyday use.

Paula Ramos e Ramos
Paula Ramos e Ramos began her training in jewellery in 2018, at the Lisbon Jewellery Centre, and deepened techniques at Cindor, in Porto, with an internship at Escuela Tous, in Barcelona. Since 2023, she has been in residence at the Design Lab, in Loulé, where she explores local techniques such as boilermaking. Born in Loulé, with Cape Verdean roots, she created the project A Joalheira Crioula, where jewellery becomes a bridge between identity, territory and contemporary artistic expression.

Margarida Valente
Margarida Valente has a degree in Interior Architecture, Restoration and Furniture, in Anthropology and a postgraduate degree in Cultural Management. She worked in an art gallery until 2021 and, since 2003, she has developed projects in the design of equipment and fashion accessories. Her project explores the reuse of various materials, changing original functions to create unique pieces, such as lamps with wooden edges, carpet waste and burel necklaces.

The Descartes Series — Beyond The Raw Material
Wesley Sacardi
The Descartes Series - beyond the raw material - consists of the study of the reuse of wood to develop furniture pieces. The work consists of the development of pieces, in the area of ecodesign, based on handcrafting techniques, and explores free production forms, where it seeks to maintain the identity of the wood used as well as other ecological, recycled or locally sourced elements, all with full creative freedom.

Bernadette Martins
Bernadette Martins, born in France and living in Loulé, is a designer graduated from IADE and specialized in tiles and ceramics. She founded her studio in 2007 and since 2013 she has been teaching creative ceramics. She is currently part of Loulé Criativo as a resident in the clay workshop and with the Frágil Jewellery brand incubated at the Design Lab. The brand creates contemporary jewelry that explores natural forms and materials such as silver, copper, brass, porcelain and glass, with porcelain being the central element. Jewellery has become a space of constant technical and artistic discovery.

Juliett Sarmiento
Juliett Sarmiento, a visual artist and graphic designer from Barranquilla, Colombia, has lived in Portugal since 2019. Master in Contemporary Artistic Creation (UA, 2021), she started bookbinding at the age of 15 with her father. At 19, she deepened her interest while studying design. Since 2013, she has been exploring editorial projects in an artistic approach, creating books, fanzines and manual embroidery in limited editions, inspired by places and people.

The Design Lab creative community aims to be dynamic and constantly growing.

Some of the resident projects, after their maximum incubation period, are considered Associated Projects, continuing the established relationship, now in a more autonomous and specific way. This category also welcomes other natural partners, very close and active, for collaborations and synergies that greatly enrich the work process of this community.

Ana Rita Contente, from Santarém, holds a degree in Design and a master's degree in Visual Arts, and Sandra Neto, a graduate, master's degree, and doctorate in Architecture, working as a freelancer in the Algarve. They have been part of the Design Lab since 2018. Together, they created PAKK, a brand of ergonomic bags that transforms a personal bag into an anatomical, practical, and comfortable container. With an innovative design, it combines ergonomics and aesthetics, offering modern models that facilitate the transport of immediately needed belongings.

Jina Nebe
Jina Nebe, born in Czechoslovakia and graduated in architecture, has been dedicated to painting for two decades. In 2020 she joined the Design Lab with "Reais Presenças", creating, with Portuguese artisans, everyday objects with local identity. Inspired by the Ria Formosa, salt pans and Serra do Caldeirão, she develops prototypes on the border between art and design, in limited editions, using screen printing, embroidery, cork engraving and ceramics.

Alessa Dresel
Alessa Dresel, a designer and ceramist graduated from Bauhaus University, did an internship at the Design Lab in 2017, having explored artisanal methods from the Algarve. With international experience in ceramics. She returned five years later to develop the Vermelinas collection, inspired by local customs, consisting of glasses and jugs for arbutus, vinho verde and water, standing out for its quality and regional identity.

Sílvia Rodrigues, graduated in Communication Design from the University of Algarve, left her work in ateliers and teaching to, in 2014, create the SIGUES brand, dedicated to handmade eco-jewelry in newsprint. Born in Querença, Loulé, it started to include noble materials such as copper, present in the "Amar Cássima" collection. SIGUES produces unique and sustainable pieces, waterproofed for greater durability, positioning itself against fast fashion and promoting environmentally friendly fashion.

Verónica Guerreiro, master in Product Design, and Paulo Tomé, plastic artist, created PidutournéeDesign in 2012 to explore sustainable solutions from the reuse of waste. Since 2017 at the Design Lab, they produce unique pieces with local organic materials, such as stones and logs, combined with recycled materials such as paper, glass or cardboard. They use artisanal techniques and provocative language to question perceptions of use and promote ecological and functional design.

Sofia Correia, urban planner, and Chris Whitelaw, an architect specializing in digital design applied to construction and founder of MakeMais, met in New York, both graduated from Columbia University. They founded, with other creatives from the Design Lab, Coletivo 28, in Loulé. Oficina Poeta Azul creates pieces that unite natural purity and the cultural heritage of the Algarve and Portugal, designed to surprise and awaken the senses, working as true tools for daydreaming.

Manoli ORTIZ
Manoli Ortiz, a Spaniard born in Belgium and graduated in Fine Arts from the Brussels School of Fine Arts, has lived since 2001 in the village of Penina, in the heart of the Rocha da Pena nature reserve, Algarve. Since 2008 she has been exploring eco-printing with plants from Serra do Caldeirão, creating handmade inks and prints. In the Memória das Plantas project, she develops decoration pieces with local species, highlighting the rockrose, in harmony with the nature that surrounds her.

Sandra Louro
Sandra Louro, an equipment designer graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, works in museography, graphic design, furniture and interiors. Inspired by Portuguese culture and Algarve handicrafts, it combines cork with other materials. In 2012 he founded the Like Cork brand, which creates eco-friendly organic products, combining innovation, respect for nature and appreciation of cork for its properties, quality and comfort, reflecting the Portuguese adventurous spirit.

Julie Pereira and Marco Pinto
Julie Pereira, with experience in cosmetics and product development, and Marco Pinto, linked to organic farming, marketing and management, created Casa Brava. The brand produces handmade soaps by cold saponification, a traditional technique of the century. XVII, using organic Portuguese raw materials, such as award-winning extra virgin olive oil. It complements the offer with accessories for bath, kitchen and well-being, made with local materials and artisanal techniques, always in harmony with nature.

Margarida Cartaxo
Margarida Cartaxo, a graduate of the Conservatory in Education through Art, worked in NGOs linked to children and young people, taught Visual Education and Drawing in Alentejo and managed rural tourism. She has collaborated since 2007 with the In Loco Association, volunteering. Passionate about manual arts and permaculture, she joined the Design Lab (2018-2019). In the Threads and Lines project, she creates geometric patterns on traditional looms, inspired by the local culture, using natural fibers and regional materials such as palm.

Susana Mendez
Susana Mendez, from Loulé, from the Algarve, with a degree in Graphic Design, started her career in illustration, but found in manual weaving and tapestry her form of artistic expression. Textile artist and trainer, she participates in creative projects and residencies to share her knowledge. He created the Dama no Jornal brand, of illustrated accessories, stationery and decoration, which evolved to integrate sustainable practices. She is a resident in the textile workshop of Loulé Criativo, in the Design Lab.

Pedro Ramalhete, PhD in Design from the University of Aveiro, studied and developed an innovative methodology for selecting materials integrated into a national database. He works as a product designer, teacher in secondary and higher education, and lecturer at universities. The Ramalhete Design brand creates handmade objects for everyday life, combining local resources and new materials in multifunctional, innovative, durable pieces with concepts that explore different uses.

Andreia Pintassilgo
Andreia Pintassilgo, PhD student in Digital Media Art (UAlg/UAb), graduated in Communication Design and specialist in Design for Tourism and Culture, was creative director of the Apolónia network (2004-2012). She works as a multidisciplinary designer in projects that promote local and regional heritage, preserving intangible culture and the sense of belonging. At the Design Lab she develops "Mãe Soberana", an identity and communication project for tourism and culture, part of her academic research.

Andana
Andana is inspired by the popular expression "You are here with an andana", alluding to boldness in dressing. The brand creates accessories and bags with patterns that unite traditional Portuguese culture with the interculturality inherited from maritime expansion. The designs are applied to fabrics to give rise to the pieces, exploring bold combinations of techniques and materials, resulting in original products that celebrate cultural diversity and artisanal creativity.

Andorinha (Swallow) is developing a collection of shoes based on the concept of the traditionally homemade “Ourelo shoe” from Olhão. Using locally available raw materials to maintain the connection between Portuguese history, tradition and current trends.

Célia Palma
Célia Palma, PhD student in Digital Media Art (UAlg/UA), with a degree in Communication Design and a master's degree in Communication, Culture and Arts, works as a collaborative designer in cultural projects. Born in the Algarve, where he started his activity in 2001, he promotes local culture by exploring photography, travel and other arts. At the Design Lab, she develops the AFOITA project, with an independent and activist language, which, inspired by the present time and the Algarve's culture, proposes artistic and social approaches to involve the community.

PURE — be loved by nature
Marta Lourenço
Marta Lourenço, born in France to a Portuguese family, moved to the Algarve at the age of 12, acquiring knowledge about life in the countryside from an early age. With a degree in Education, she created in 2015 the brand PURE – be loved by nature, integrated in the Design Lab since 2020. It handcrafted children's footwear and clothing with natural materials, taking advantage of leftover fabrics to create aromatic pillows with therapeutic properties that promote relaxation and better sleep.

Sandra Neto
Sandra Neto, with a degree and a master's degree in Architecture, a PhD from UBI, works as a freelancer in Architecture and Urbanism in the Algarve. Incubated at the Design Lab, she founded the Mess Materials project, dedicated to developing innovative eco-materials in a laboratory context for Architecture and Design. MESS repurports waste and out-of-date materials, creating multifunctional surfaces that reduce the ecological footprint of construction and reveal the intrinsic aesthetics of these elements.

Margarida Santos
Margarida Santos, PhD student in Heritage Studies and research fellow at the University of Algarve, has a master's degree in Communication Design for Tourism and Culture and a degree in Fine Arts – Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon, with experience since 1995. At the Design Lab she develops the DLUSA project, creating rugs and tapestries in traditional weaving (Beiriz knot stitch), inspired by the Algarve's platbands, Mediterranean architecture and vernacular patterns, using pure biodegradable wool.

Samuel Santos, graduated in Space Design from ESAD. CR, is dedicated to exploring new ways of working with natural stone, a passion inherited from his grandfather and father. With experience in international projects, he created "Brecha", a collection that uses Algarve stone to create objects that reflect the identity of the region, its people, traditions and architecture, valuing local techniques and knowledge. “A Algarvia” Chair

The prototype of the “A Algarvia” resting chair will be improved in terms of comfort and production engineering focusing on it’s future commercialization. This chair will present some variants, including different materials, craft techniques, reflections of local culture. Laura Carlos started this project in 2015, in a Design & Crafts residence and will continue developing it at Loulé Design Lab.

Leni Farenzena
Leni Farenzena, an architect trained in Florence and with a master's degree from ISCTE-IUL, collaborated with studios in Europe and Mexico before founding ForNature Design. Leni creates furniture inspired by nature, combining innovative design, traditional techniques and local materials such as clay and cane. Sustainability, appreciation of local content and innovation guide the manual production, made in partnership with artisans from the Algarve, resulting in unique pieces.

Susan Sutherland
Susan Sutherland, born in Scotland and living in Portugal, grew up connected to spinning, inheriting the passion of her father, owner of a carpet factory. In the Ovelha Negra Knits project, she cards and spins the wool she uses in garments, accessories, toys and household items, all handmade. Inspired by local nature, it integrates artisanal traditions and sustainability, accompanying the entire process, from shearing to final creation, resulting in personalized and exclusive products.

André Silva Sancho, graduated in Product Design – ceramics and glass – from ESAD. CR, won in 2019 the "Caldas Cidade Bordallo" contest with the project "Sardinhas Bordallo Pinheiro". In 2020 he presented the BLOWPLASTIC project at the Rossana Orlandi Gallery, Milan, as part of FUORISALONE. Developed with PLA, bio-plastic, reusable and recyclable, the project uses unconventional molds, uniting industry and craftsmanship, with pieces between art and design.
